Case Study:
Instructions for Use

How might we Optimize instructions to improve patient outcomes?

Formative usability studies are a critical step toward ensuring that pharmaceutical Instructions for Use (IFUs) convey how to deliver injections successfully. We collaborate with Human Factors Engineering teams to design, prototype and iterate for impact.

Learn

In tandem with engineers and product specialists, we participate in formative studies to observe patient and caregiver behaviors. By watching users attempt to complete a series of scripted tasks in real time, we are able to simulate an injection experience, track moments where user errors unfold, and learn directly from individuals about their challenges and pain points.

Strategize

As the designers in the room, we strategically leverage our design theory expertise, prototyping capabilities, and group facilitation skills to iterate on designs throughout usability studies. We ideate potential design solutions, lead conversations between cross-functional stakeholders, and strategically adapt stimuli to test what works best.

Activate

When we iterate, we explore different information flows, visual styles, and form factors to determine what will improve a user’s ability to understand and take the steps required to complete a successful injection. Over the course of a study, these small shifts evolve into an optimized set of instructions that mitigate risks, and ensure proper drug delivery.
