Case Study:
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

How might we launch employee initiatives that inspire adoption?

As the country’s largest philanthropy solely focused on health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is dedicated to building a Culture of Health for everyone in America. To achieve that goal, it is imperative that employees work in ways that reflect RWJF’s values.

Learn

To align with The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s vision for the future, their guiding principles needed to evolve. Olio partnered with Portland-based Brew Advisors and Minneapolis-based Schwartz Powell to ground not only in the rich history of the their guiding principles, but also their staff’s aspirations for incorporating these values into their daily work at RWJF.

Strategize

The launch of RWJF’s new guiding principles was framed as an inclusive, inspiring invitation to hundreds of employees that had deeply varied experiences with, and understanding of, the principles to date. To generate excitement and set expectations regarding the launch, we created a rollout plan that included a series of teaser communications and opportunities for co creation.

Activate

On launch day, we hosted an all staff meeting to reveal the new guiding principles. Instead of taking a top down approach to sharing the new language, we asked a diverse, set of cross-functional staff to serve as ambassadors and introduce each principle with a personal anecdote of what that particular idea or concept meant to them. Afterwards, all staff broke out into small groups to reflect on how they could begin to live into the new principles.

Results

“I was very proud of all the coordination, design, thought and support that went into this. It felt very “one Foundation” and ready to deploy. You’ve injected us with a burst of creativity and style we’ve needed, and I can now see how this will inspire the next steps to bring our GPs to life.”
